FSSAI registration is a licence granted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India that allows businesses to carry on business activities in relation to food manufacturing or processing or packaging or distributing.
What are the categories of FSSAI licence?
FSSAI license can be mainly divided into two categories, state level license and central license. Hotels, Restaurants, Millers with production of less than 1MT per day and other small or medium scale manufactures come under the state level license. Food importers, caterers catering to Railways, Air, Defense establishments and large scale food manufacturers come under the purview of the central license.
What are the documents required for obtaining food licence?
The application for FSSAI License in the prescribed format along with identity and address proof of the promoters, proof of possession of the premises where the food business is undertaken and the entity’s incorporation certificate or registration certificate must be submitted. In case of food manufactures or processors, additional information such as list of equipment, layout of the unit, category of foods manufactured, etc., maybe required.
Do all the businesses involved in food business require to obtain food licence?
No. Petty retailer, hawker, itinerant vendor or a temporary stallholder or small scale or cottage or such other industries relating to food business or tiny food business operator are exempt from obtaining FSSAI License.
Will there be a single licence for the same premises if there are multiple licenses for different product by same FBO?
There will be different license issued under FSSA as requirement of each product is different.
What are the consequences for non registration with FSSAI?
Operating food business without FSSAI registration is punishable with imprisonment of upto six months and also with a fine of not more than five lakh rupees.
What is the validity for the food licence?
Food licence is granted for 1 or 2 years and can be renewed later.
Does Start-up also require FSSAI registration/License?
Yes, it is legally mandatory for all food business start-up to get FSSAI license/registration to commence their business.
