Professional Tax Online Payment

4 Mins read

Professional Tax (PT) is a state tax that is paid by salaried employees, professionals, and businesspersons in India. It is a compulsory deduction from salary and business income, and the rates differ from state to state. Professional tax is deducted by employers from the salaries of their employees and paid to the state government, whereas self-employed persons pay it directly.

With the online payment of tax, the majority of state governments now have online portals for paying professional tax, making the transaction fast, transparent, and convenient. Knowing how to pay professional tax online helps ensure timely payment, prevents penalties, and simplifies financial operations for individuals and businesses.

This blog offers a step-by-step process on how to pay professional tax online, including eligibility, tax slabs applicable, and state-specific websites.

Introduction

Professional tax is a type of direct tax levied by state governments on people who are deriving income from salaries, professions, trades, or employment. It is charged to-

  • Salaried employees (deducted by the employers).
  • Self-employed professionals like doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants, and consultants.
  • Businessmen and entrepreneurs earning in excess of the state-defined threshold.

The amount of professional tax to be paid differs from state to state because it is controlled by separate state legislations. Employers are to deduct and remit PT on behalf of their employees, whereas self-employed persons have to pay it individually through their state’s e-tax portal.

With online professional tax payment systems, taxpayers can easily remit their dues, print receipts, and file returns electronically.

Who Needs to Pay Professional Tax?

  1. Salaried Employees: Professional tax is deducted from the monthly salary of employees by the employers and is paid to the state government. The tax is determined according to the state’s tax slab and the salary bracket of the employee.
  1. Self-Employed Professionals: Self-employed professionals like doctors, lawyers, consultants, freelancers, and chartered accountants are required to register and pay professional tax directly to the concerned state authority.
  1. Businessmen and Traders: Shopkeepers, traders, and business owners who earn more than a specified amount have to register under professional tax legislation and pay PT on an annual or half-yearly basis, as per state regulations.

Every state has different tax slabs, exemptions, and payment due dates for professional tax.

Exemptions from Professional Tax

Some people and professions are exempt from professional tax according to state rules. Some of the most common exemptions are-

  • Senior Citizens – People who are above 65 years old are exempted in most states.
  • Handicapped Individuals – People with 40% or more disability (including blindness and hearing disabilities) are exempted.
  • Armed Forces Personnel – Soldiers, sailors, airmen, CRPF, and BSF personnel are exempt from paying professional tax.
  • Women in the Textile Industry – Women who work in textile occupations are exempted in states such as Maharashtra.
  • Agricultural Workers and Farmers – Those who work on farms and plantations are exempted because of seasonal income.
  • Parents of Disabled Children – Parents of disabled children are eligible for exemption in some states.
  • Charitable and Educational Organizations – Workers in established non-profit organizations can be exempt in some states.

As the rules for exemption differ from state to state, it is better to verify the eligibility with the concerned state’s professional tax department.
